Originally Etruscan, Todi is a beautiful medieval town located on a hilltop south of Perugia. Access from the main car park below is now easy thanks to a funivia that resembles a cable car on railtracks. Piazza del Popolo is the main square and, of course, is flanked by the Duomo (Cathedral) and civic buildings, the Palazzo del Capitano, Palazzo del Popolo and Palazzo del Priori. The Duomo is worth a look inside and there is a small art gallery/museum in the Palazzo del Capitano.

San Fortunato is the largest church other than the Duomo and located close to the Piazza del Popolo. Inside you’ll find a small fresco by Masolino di Panicale, of particular note because he was teacher of Masaccio, one of the first Renaissance painters. You can also climb the bell tower, worth it for the views of the stunning Umbrian countryside.

Santa Maria della Consolazione is one of Italy?s finest Renaissance churches, built, as is typical of this style of church, in its own space outside the town walls. Todihas also been classified as the 'città ideale', or ideal town, by a group of American researchers who were looking to find an urban centre ideal for the social demands of the future. Why is it the ideal city? Because it holds no more than 15-20,000 people, it sits in a hilly zone in harmony with its environment; the administrative facilities are all conveniently located in the heart of the town while the ancillary services remain outside the town walls.

Deruta is famous for the glazed pottery known as maiolica,it has a lovely old centre with numerous maiolica shops. However, most visitors head for the enormous warehouse shops near the dual carriageway (E45) below.
